hi so sorry i just needed to say this somewhere but holy shit it’s crazy how so much of rpstwt genuinely see the boys as fictional characters rather than real life human beings, whether they realise it or not. because why are people pitting real life relationships against each other like fucking edward vs jacob??? why is top/bottom discourse a thing??? the boys aren’t singular dimensional characters with traits that are reduced to ‘taking it up the ass’, they’re human beings with complex personalities like literally everyone else. i get it, free will, you’re allowed to do what you want, but i genuinely think some people need to ask themselves if they’ve toed across the line that separates participating in fandom culture and straight up objectifying them for their own personal satisfaction. anyways that’s it i hope you have a great day
hi! thank you for the lovely words! i do want to start by i guess cautioning against trying to neatly define Some shipping behaviour as objectifying and Other shipping behaviour as okay. because rps is like, innately reductive and objectifying. i call it playing barbies for a reason. no matter how much i put mttw in my salad spinner, and no matter how many tweets i include in a thread where i ramble about The Thesis, the fact remains that even by having a thesis i am flattening his personhood into that of a character. and i don't think this is morally incorrect or wrong, because this is how being a fan works. we will never interact with three-dimensional and fully realized people, we engage with a projected image of an idol. this is why im so uninterested with what's "canon" or the narrative or whatever. anyways, that's my little soapbox, i just want to be like. rps is rps, and there's no Good vs Bad rps. just Tolerable vs Annoying rps jfjfhdksla
i strongly agree with what you're saying though about how annoying it is for the guys to be treated like fictional characters though. the appeal of rps is that the source material has infinite permutations of interpretation and none of them can be disproven as "wrong" bc it's not like the creator can just tell you so. unfortunately, this leads to interpretations that are tropey, poorly characterized, borderline homophobic and sometimes what i'd go as far as to call exploitative? yeah, idk. but again, the attitude about there being a "wrong way to do rps" is what leads to innate ship discourse and the insane hate trains that my friends have received.
and i will fully admit to ranting about other people doing rps wrong and other annoying things that i have criticized!!! but i do that on my priv. because it's a point of personal opinion and not something that i want to assert as a Valuable Perspective To Be Considered By The Community. because it isn't. it's a selfish little perspective, which is a lovely thing to have, but people need to consider which perspectives are productive to offer and which ones come across as controlling, annoying, and unnecessary
