all traps used in the saw franchise are built and designed to be functional! of course the actors are not in any real danger (though a few requested to be, for authenticity's sake) and they take out parts of the traps that would make them actually deadly. For example, the reverse bear trap would work, if it was hooked up to an air compressor and if it was attached to the actress' face- but for the filming of the movie, it wasnt !
