wrt rei writing; yeah, i get that. i've read most stories featuring rei, sometimes even several different translations, and it really varies a lot!!
rei is honestly one of the easier characters to write for me, but specifically in terms of like, getting into that kind of mindset/tapping into rei emotions/thought patterns is easy for me? so i can get stuff down pretty quickly (compared to some other characters). but i'm not at all confident in phrasing and such, and english isn't my first language either, so there's that too.
despite all the things that make rei's speech difficult to write/translate, i think at times i still struggle more with writing wataru though... specifically the 'speaking in theatrics' part is something that just doesn't really come naturally to me. everytime i try to do it i hear eichi's voice in my head telling me it's all wrong and i'm not a real wataru fan......
rei being the most popular character on ao3 IS really funny... there's something to be said here about how 'most popular' doesn't equal 'most understood', but this is NOT about her speech at all. 'you fell for the facade that was meant to be dismantled by the reader' type of thing.
i want to mention that i do love how you write rei (AND WATARU!!) though, i think it's really good :)
YEAH its something where i feel like i have a decent handle of reis mindset, especially since i tend to write him around wataru and eichi where he tends to be in a specific one (somewhere between "annoyed" and "going along with it" plus the complicated emotions he has abt both of them) it really is just abt character voice and making him sound Real that way
i think the time i had the best grasp on watarus voice was after id just seen several shakespeare plays .. i try to make the way they talk kinda stilted and impersonal but their voice is smth i like to have fun with... im more confident in how much i Know about wataru so i feel more confident deviating from that?
