Usually as their PFP, as you mentioned, or if they have other pics that represent them. For instance, one of my fedi friends uses the Disney Robin Hood character as his PFP, so I tend to picture him that way, even though I've seen his real picture too!

And to explain the media part, well it's either based on your fictionkins, the characters you won't stop yapping about and adoring, or a pattern I see in the characters/media you're invested in.

Patterns are the most vividly chaotic things I can imagine, since it'll incorporate various types of media and characters, making some weird mural or class photo with all the characters and stuff you're associated with.

Honestly, it really depends! If their PFP is a person, then I do tend to associate it with them. But if they change it often or show snippets of themselves (hands, hair, whatever really) then I kind of just make up an appearance I think would suit them. And of course, if they draw themselves in any way, I immediately adopt that as their appearance. I don't really have any set image of anyone in my head though, just characteristics I think they'd have really.

i tend to imagine people with the appearance of other irl people ive met in the past, whoever they're most similar to. there's always someone i seem to get reminded of? that is if i've seen a glimpse of their personality. if not then automatically basing it off their pfp, display name, and layout

A sona, most of the time. I can sometimes imagine what I think their voice would sound like or what face they'd be making. Vaguely. Some occasions I do only see them as their Pfp if what they say fits whoever is their character.
